Marschall S. Runge, MD., Ph.D. Chair and Professor, Department of Medicine
The Department is the largest and most complex unit in the School of Medicine and is composed of 10 divisions, 9 centers and multiple programs. We have a talented faculty of 840 full-time/voluntary members as well as 409 staff members engaged in academic activities. More of the Chair's message
On March 16, I had the opportunity to speak to the UNC Health Care System Board of Directors on the importance of research to our academic medical center. My goal was to demonstrate how the basic science, clinical, and translational research that is done throughout the School of Medicine (using research done by faculty of the Department of Medicine as an example) allows us to build our reputation, distinguish ourselves from other medical centers and, ultimately, to improve the care we are able to provide to our patients. Because of the limited time, I was only able to give a smattering of examples, but by doing so I think the Board really appreciated the scientific advances being made, the continuing emphasis on recruitment and retention of great scientists, and the importance of research for the financial viability of the Department of Medicine, the School of Medicine as well as UNC-CH. I could not have given this presentation without tremendous help from many of you who provided information and slides, and a lot of work on the presentation by Ermine and Bruce. I hope you will take a few minutes to look through the slides in "Research and the Clinical Mission."
