Outside of work, our fellows enjoy living in and around Chapel Hill, also known as the "Southern Part of Heaven."  Chapel Hill is home to the University of North Carolina, the oldest state university and home to the top-ranked UNC School of Medicine, and the Gillings School of Global Public Health.  The hospital, located on UNC's beautiful main campus, is within walking distance to downtown Chapel Hill and Franklin Street, home to many outstanding restaurants, shops, and bars.

Chapel Hill, with approximately 58,000 residents, along with nearby Durham and Raleigh, comprise the three corners of the Research Triangle.  In addition to the efforts of UNC, Duke, and NC State, the Research Triangle Park (RTP) has made this area a center for high tech research and development.  RTP is home to many biotech, pharmacuetical, and information technology companies.

Carolina Basketball Museum
While Chapel Hill retains a small town feel, all of the amenities of a major metropolitan area are within a twenty-minute drive.  Raleigh-Durham International Airport provides direct flights to most major US cities.  The Durham Performing Arts Center hosts many major musical acts and a Broadway series.  Raleigh is home to the 2006 Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes.  The Durham Bulls Athletic Park is home to the minor league team made famous by the movie Bull Durham.  Certainly we remain biased to the outstanding North Carolina Tar Heels sports program, which boasts an amazing combined 40 NCAA National Championships.

Outside of the Triangle, North Carolina's beaches are as close as a two-hour drive.  The Outer Banks offer a unique and more secluded beach experience.  To the West, the Blue Ridge Mountains are only a three-hour drive away.  Whitewater rafting and hiking are popular in the summer and fall, and skiing and snowboarding are available in the winter.  Asheville is a frequent weekend destination for our fellows and home to the Biltmore Estate, with its gardens and winery, and the Grove Park Inn resort and spa.  Between the mountains and the sea North Carolina has 12 national parks and 29 state parks; several located near Chapel Hill.

Finally, Chapel Hill is a wonderful place for those with families and young children.  There are excellent public and private schools in the area.

Given all that it has to offer, it's not surprising that Chapel Hill was recently ranked 10th in Money Magazines "Best Places to Live in America."  We hope you will take time to explore our wonderful town.
