The UNC Diabetes Care Center provides a wide range of services to patients with diabetes, including consultative and comprehensive diabetes care, educational services and referrals to other specialists. The Diabetes Care Center staff specializes in the evaluation and therapy of all aspects of diabetes, including blood glucose management, cardiovascular risk reduction, diet modification, weight management, exercise training, insulin pump therapy, glucose monitoring, foot care, stress management, as well as specific therapy to prevent or treat diabetes-related complications. The Diabetes Care Center is an ADA Recognized Diabetes Education program and does provide either comprehensive or targeted diabetes education to meet our patients specific needs.
The DCC is not a walk-in clinic; however, self-referrals are welcome. For patients in whom delay can result in complications, we generally can provide an appointment within 1-2 business days including pregnant women with diabetes and people with severe hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. The care we provide is a complement to that provided by a primary care provider. If you do not have a primary care provider, we would be happy to refer you to someone in the area.
PATIENT EDUCATION
Patient education and preventive care are high priorities at the UNC Diabetes Care Center. One of the guiding principles of the Diabetes Care Center is the idea that patients, not doctors or nurses, take care of diabetes on a day-to-day basis. The healthcare professional's role is to teach the patient how to care for his or her own diabetes. In order to achieve this, both individual instruction and group classes in diabetes management are available. Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE) provides education and motivation in many important areas including medication management, proper nutrition and exercise, and prevention of complications. The UNC Diabetes Care Center is an American Diabetes Association Recognized Diabetes Education Program meeting the National Standards for excellence in diabetes education.
Another facet of the UNC Diabetes Care Center is our participation in research studies, which have led to the development of new diabetes medications and devices. Patients of the UNC Diabetes Care Center are offered the opportunity to participate in clinical trials, when appropriate for their condition. Volunteers from the community are also recruited. Studies generally provide a number of benefits to participants, including study medication, laboratory test results, a physical exam, an ECG, dietary counseling, and modest compensation, at no cost to the study participant.
Feel free to call for further information regarding studies at the UNC Diabetes Care Center by dialing (919) 484-0931 Ext. 269 or toll free (877)-484-1015.
