Clinical Services
As a subspecialty of Medicine, Digestive Diseases provides consultative and procedural services to referring medical practitioners. Because it pertains to a multi-organ system, the discipline of Digestive Diseases itself is composed of several distinct entities. At UNC we offer several such areas:
The Center for Biliary and Pancreatic Diseases is a multidisciplinary service designed to offer state-of-the-art treatment for patients with conditions involving the pancreas and/or bile ducts and to promote clinical and basic research in pancreatic and biliary diseases. A biliary and pancreatic surgeon, Dr. John Martinie, and a therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopist, Dr. Ian Grimm, staff the Center in collaboration with colleagues from numerous other specialties with expertise in diverse aspects of biliary and pancreatic disease. All disorders involving the biliary and/or pancreatic system are treated in this Center, including cancer of the bile ducts or pancreas, acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic pseudocysts, cystic lesions of the pancreas, and complications of gallstones and/or prior biliary surgery. Dr. Martinie has had advanced fellowship training in management of complex biliary and pancreatic disorders. While at UNC, he has taken advantage of surgical robotic technology to manage some of these conditions with less invasive surgery. Available endoscopic techniques include therapeutic biliary and pancreatic ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, and endoscopic cystgastrostomy. Colleagues in both diagnostic and interventional radiology provide the necessary imaging and therapeutic capabilities required for managing complex pancreaticobiliary conditions. Patients are seen both in the GI and Surgery Outpatient Clinics and as inpatients.

The goals of The Center for Esophageal Diseases and Swallowing (CEDAS) at UNC are threefold:
- First and foremost, we seek to promote excellent care of patients with esophageal diseases by using a multidisciplinary approach involving expert gastroenterologists, surgeons, radiologists, pulmonologists, and otolaryngologists.
- Second, we are expanding the knowledge of esophageal diseases such as reflux, Barrett's esophagus, and achalasia by clinical and epidemiological research.
- Finally, we are educating both the public and other physicians about the correct diagnosis and management of esophageal diseases with our prolific educational programs.

The UNC Center for Functional GI and Motility Disorders is a research, training, education, and treatment facility dedicated to the understanding and care of patients with these disorders using a multidisciplinary approach. By integrating treatment with both gastroenterologists and psychologists, the Center is at the forefront of the field in finding bridges between psychosocial stressors and functional GI and Motility disorders. To this end, national and international physicians, scholars, and researchers come for advance training opportunities that are exclusive to the Center.
In these years, the UNC Center for Functional GI & Motility Disorders has become the premier site for research and treatment in the field. Its clinical program coupled with a state-of-the-art-motility lab is considered among the best in the world, in part because of the Center's unique multidisciplinary, symptom-based patient care approach, and its focus on the medical, physiological, and psychosocial factors in evaluating and treating patients with these disorders.
