BONE MARROW AND STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION

The Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplantation Program was established in 1992. Since then, over 400 patients have undergone transplantation. The program cares for both adults and children with hematologic malignancies and solid tumors.

Members of this program use a multidisciplinary approach to provide comprehensive and supportive care to all recipients, donors, and their families.

UNC BREAST CENTER

The UNC breast center takes a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating patients with breast cancer. Members of the program include physicians from surgical oncology, plastic surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology, as well as radiologists, pathologists, reconstructive surgeons, oncology nurses, a geneticist, physical therapists, and a social worker.

The breast center offers the most up-to-date advances in screening methods, diagnostic tools, surgical techniques, and medical and radiation therapies. The overall goal of the program is to ensure that patients receive leading-edge, integrated specialty treatment and complete care for their breast cancer.

CANCER GENETICS PROGRAM

The Cancer Genetics Program provides consultations for and accepts referrals of individuals who may be at an increased risk of developing cancer due to their family history. We have assembled a core team of specialists comprised of a genetics counselor, a medical geneticist, two medical oncologists, and faculty from molecular diagnostics.

This core team works with members of other multidisciplinary programs to integrate issues of family history and possible increased risk into overall patient assessment. When high risk patients are identified, program members meet to review and discuss the patient's case. The exchange of knowledge and opinions among team members ensures that the best possible set of recommendations is developed for each patient.

GASTROINTESTINAL ONCOLOGY PROGRAM

The Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology Program established a Multi-disciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating patients with GI cancer in 1979. The program provides and coordinates the expertise of physicians from medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, thoracic surgery, transplant surgery, GI surgery, GI medicine, diagnostic radiology, surgical pathology, reconstructive surgery, and oncology nursing.

This team approach ensures that expertly developed care is delivered in an efficient, caring, and effective manner. Our program offers the most up-to-date advances in screening methods, diagnostic tools, surgical techniques, and medical and radiation therapies. The overall goal of the program is to ensure that patients receive cutting-edge, integrated specialty care for their GI cancer.

The Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Myeloma Program offers patients and referring physicians access to a complete range of both diagnostic and therapeutic services for the treatment of hematologic malignancies. THROMBOPHILIA PROGRAM

The mission of the Thrombophilia Program is (1) to provide the best medical care (diagnosis and treatment) to patients with thrombotic disorders (venous and arterial) and premature arteriosclerosis, (2) to conduct clinical research on epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of these disorders, and to collaborate with basic researchers to answer basic research questions on thrombosis, and (3) to educate patients and health care providers on thrombophilia. The Thrombophilia Program is part of the larger Carolina Cardiovascular Biology Center.

 

THORACIC ONCOLOGY PROGRAM

The Thoracic Oncology Program, formally launched in 1995, is designed to bring leading-edge care to patients with thoracic malignancies, including cancers of the lung, esophagus, thymus, chest wall and mediastinum.

By incorporating specialists from pulmonary medicine, surgery, medical and radiation oncology, thoracic radiology, pathology, and oncology nursing into a single patient care team, we ensure that expertly developed care is individualized for each patient and delivered in a well-coordinated and caring manner.

GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY PROGRAM

The Gynecologic Oncology Program takes a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating women with pre-invasive (benign, in situ) and invasive (malignant) gynecologic cancers. Our team includes physicians from gynecologic oncology and radiation oncology as well as a surgical pathologist and oncology nurses. Social services, psychiatry, and other support personnel are readily available to assist not only our patients but also their family members. The exchange of knowledge and opinions among team members and support service providers ensures that the best possible treatment plan is developed for each patient and that the patient's support needs are met. Each week, a case review conference is held. During this conference, complex new cases are thoroughly reviewed and discussed and program members work as a team to develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

HEAD AND NECK CANCER PROGRAM

The Head and Neck Cancer Program offers a full range of leading-edge diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for the treatment of all benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck including but not limited to tumors of:

  • Oral cavity, pharynx and larynx
  • Soft tissue
  • Thyroid
  • Nose and sinuses
  • Ear and temporal bone
  • Skull base
  • Salivary glands
  • Cerebello-pontine angle
  • Head and neck in pediatric patients

We offer patients a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancer. Our team consists of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, diagnostic and interventional radiologists, dentists, epidemiologists, prosthetic specialists, nutritionists, speech and swallowing specialists, nurses and social workers. This team of specialists brings expertise and understanding to these complex cancers where vital life functions may be affected.

PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY PROGRAM

The Pediatric Oncology Program is part of the Department of Pediatrics, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Centerand the Children’s Oncology Group. Our mission is to treat and cure children and adolescents with cancer and blood diseases through participation in both national and locally designed treatment protocols. We believe that the care of children with cancer is a dynamic process based on improving treatments through clinical and laboratory research.

Our program has active inpatient and outpatient services and an accredited fellowship program pediatric hematology-oncology. In addition to on-site clinical activities, program members see patients in outreach settings through AHEC ( Area Health Education Centers) clinics in Wilmington. In Chapel Hill, multidisciplinary clinics are dedicated to patients with hemophilia ( through the Comprehensive Hemophilia Diagnostic and Treatment Center), sickle cell disease, brain tumors, late effects of anticancer therapy as well as general hematology/oncology.

These clinics are staffed with social workers, psychologists, school teachers and other pediatric subspecialists in addition to the major oncology specialties ( chemotherapists; radiation oncologists; general-, orthopedic-, and neuro-surgeons; nurses). A combined adult-pediatric bone marrow transplantation program offers autologous, allogeneic, matched unrelated donor, umbilical cord transplants for malignant and nonmalignant diseases.
