It's a fiction novel about a UNC Intensivist who forms a special bond with a CF patient awaiting a transplant. Eric Edwards (PGY-2) has published "Lithium Treatment Prevents Neurocognitive Deficit Resulting from Cranial Irradiation" in Cancer Research. Congratulations Eric!

Sachin Patel's (PGY-2) poem "Call Room" has been published in an anthology called Body Language: Poems of the Medical Training Experience, and will be available November 2007 at Barnes & Noble and other retail bookstores.

Bridger Clarke's (PGY-1) abstract: Treatment of Biliary Strictures Secondary to Chronic Pancreatitis: Comparison of Temporarily Placed Covered Self Expandable Metal Stents (CSEMS) vs. Plastic Stents was accepted for presentation at the 2006 American College of Gastroenterology National Conference.

Morgan McDonald (PGY-4, Med-Peds) was elected President of the 2006-2007 UNC Housestaff Council

Dick Wardrop (M-P PGY-5, Medicine Chief) has a paper in the upcoming issue of Gene Therapy on preventing the development of inhibitor antibodies in hemophiliac mice.

Dick Wardrop presented in San Francisco at the Society for Critical Care Medicine Congress in January, 2006. Topic: "Risk factors for development of nosocomial infection in pediatric intensive care".

Nate Lambert (PGY-4, Medicine Chief), Joe Eron and others published a case report in the June 20, 2006 Annals of Internal Medicine titled "Chagasic encephalitis as the initial manifestation of AIDS". PMID# 16785485

Phuong Doan (PGY-4, Medicine Chief) and Evan Dellon published a case report on chronic Budd-Chiari syndrome in a March, 2006 issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. PMID# 16527683

Sid Shah (PGY-3, Medicine) and Holly Humphrey (PGY-2, Medicine) presented a poster titled "Tale of a Broken Heart: Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy" at the North Carolina ACP conference in Feb, 2006

Sid Shah and others presented a poster at the National ACP conference in April, 2005 titled "What Good are the Guidelines? Are Patients with LVSD Receiving Proper Management?"

Cheryl Lowry (PGY-2, Medicine) presented a poster titled "Decreased Exercise Tolerance in Patients with Previously Undiagnosed Diastolic Dysfunction" at the AHA Scientific Sessions in November 2005.

The Carolina Companion - a book of evidence based internal medicine and pediatrics case reports - is the brainchild of Dick Wardrop and Allen Liles. Medicine and pediatrics residents are authoring individual chapters based on real cases taken from the UNC wards.
